Why was John Wayne (born Marion Robert Morrison) named Duke?

A local (Southern California) fireman gave him the nickname "Little Duke" because of the dog that constantly accompanied him "Big Duke" an Airedale terrier. He preferred Duke to Marion so the nickname stuck.
